Then the Probe Shown in the Picture Is Inserted Into the Tailpipe. It Carries Exhaust Gases From the Engine to the Analyzer Which Measures Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbon Emissions. Original Caption: Car Entering a Safety Inspection Building in an Easily Accessible Location in Downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. Safety Inspections Began in 1940 and Were Done on a Semi-Annual Basis until It Became an Annual Event in January, 1975. In Addition to the Safety Check All Light Duty, Spark Ignition Powered Motor Vehicles Are Hooked Up to an Exhaust Analyzer and Monitored for Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbon Emissions. Under the Old System 800 to 1,200 Vehicles a Day Were Checked 08/1975
